Today finally feels like the right time to announce the launch of a passion project that I have had waiting in the wings for several months: “Lifeboat”; an industry focused, journalistic series that gives a voice and face to the multi-faceted lives and stories of our wide constellation.

In an industry that has become like family to me, I have struggled with how to give back in a more impactful way than just through my current work as a food and beverage photographer. This band of misfits accepted me, and set me on my feet, when I washed up on the shores of a new world as a humble dishwasher and prep cook, an immigrant from my own former life. I have come to love and cherish all the vibrant characters of this universe, from the back of the house to the front of the house, to the farmers and purveyors, imaginaries and creators. Journeying deeper into my career within the hospitality industry, I’ve noticed a lack of equal representation... with the shiny new and popular places and characters getting most of the spotlight and media. I hope to bring a deeper sense of connection and inclusion to ALL of the cast, as well as pay homage to my Grandfather, who was a lifelong journalist.

Why Lifeboat?

It was impossible for me to NOT draw parallels between the 108 year old catastrophe that struck in the middle of a dark night, and the current situation. Our wealthiest businessmen and prominent politicians propping up the facade of of a strong, healthy economy, and socio-economic structure, all the while demanding their services from our third class passengers and workers who are being crushed under the pressure of a capsizing ship. COVID-19 has leveled the food and beverage universe, from the top restaurant and bar owners to the mom and pop run dives and neighborhood eateries, with a brutal equality, and the ticking time bomb of social injustice that went off this year, has schooled us.

“Lifeboat” isn’t a series for the wealthiest, most popular, and pushy citizens aboard this sinking ship…. This is a series for the underrepresented, overwhelmed, tired, yet resilient, 3rd class passengers. Our fractured community needs connection now more than ever before, and I hope to help bring that.
